UGC ad examples: 12 formats that sell, and when to use each

The UGC ad formats we brief creators on, an example hook for each, how we brief and match creators, and when to bring in a UGC agency.

The format isn't what makes a UGC ad sell. The angle is.

Two unboxing videos can land completely differently, because one is talking to the right person about the right problem and the other is just showing a box. So use the examples below as containers for a strong angle, not as a template to copy.

These are the 12 formats we brief our creators on, what each is good for, and an example hook for each. The example hooks are illustrations, not results.

Talking head

One creator, one camera, one clear point. It's the simplest format and still one of the most reliable, because it's easy to rotate hooks on the same body. A founder talking head can be even stronger: one brand we worked with moved from generic UGC to a 60-second founder origin story and its hook rate went from 28% to 52%.

Problem / solution and before and after

Name the frustration in the first 3 seconds, then show the product removing it. Before and after is the visual version. Only use it where the result is real and the claim is allowed in your category.

Taste test and sceptic to believer

Real, unscripted first reactions remove doubt faster than any script. They work best when several different creators try the product, so the ad reads as several independent opinions.

Street interview

Strangers are more believable than a creator you've paid. Street interviews are strong for cold audiences and for brands that need to stand out in a crowded feed. It's the format behind some of the fashion content we've produced.

Day in the life and lifestyle integration

These sell habit. The product shows up naturally in a routine instead of being the star, which makes them good top-of-funnel ads for people who don't yet know they need it.

Skit, tutorial and FOMO

Skits earn attention in crowded categories. Tutorials sell products that need explaining. FOMO and social proof ads work once a product is genuinely popular and you have the proof to show it.

How we brief UGC creators so the ads actually sell

Locked zones and freedom zones. We lock the parts that have to be right: the product demo or proof, the offer, the core claim and what the CTA asks for. The creator owns the hook phrasing, their tone, how they set up the story and their visual style. We never dictate tone, a word-for-word script or facial expressions, because that's what makes UGC look like an ad.

Three levels of briefing. Experienced creators get loose direction and reference ads. Mid-level creators get a clear structure with do and avoid lists. Newer creators get a semi-script that loosens as they improve.

Casting for the persona, not the follower count. If the persona is mums in their 30s and 40s, we cast real mums in real settings, like the kitchen, the school run or behind a buggy, with no influencer polish.

Creator rules on every brief:

  • Never open with "Hey guys" or the brand name.
  • Only use real, verifiable numbers. Never invent results or reviews.
  • Get consent from anyone filmed.
  • Post nothing before the brand approves it.
  • Send both the raw footage and a final cut.

Should you use a UGC agency or brief creators yourself?

Briefing creators directly works well while you're small. It stops working when you see these signs:

  • Creators ghost, ignore the brief, refuse reshoots or deliver uneven quality.
  • Usage rights and consent aren't sorted properly.
  • Costs creep up through revisions and add-ons.
  • You have plenty of UGC, but every ad says the same thing.
  • Nobody can say why your last winner won.

That's when a UGC agency earns its place.

What we do differently

  • A testing system, not a content feed. Every UGC ad has a hypothesis behind it, and a tracker shows which angles, hooks and formats won.
  • 600+ vetted creators across the UK, Ireland, US, Canada, Australia and UAE, matched to your customer by age, look, voice and market.
  • Briefs start from customer research: your reviews, comments and calls.
  • Real creators and AI together, so angles can be tested fast with AI UGC and scaled with real people.
  • Speed. Your first creatives go live in 10 to 15 working days, with 2 revision rounds.
  • We work alongside your media buyer or agency, rather than replacing them.

"We've tried agencies before."

Most UGC and content agencies are built around output, not outcomes. They deliver a batch of videos and move on. We run a testing system, so every batch is built on what the last one proved.

FAQs

What is a UGC ad?

A UGC ad is a paid ad made in the style of user-generated content: a real person talking about, using or reacting to a product, usually filmed on a phone, so it feels native to the feed rather than like a traditional advert.

What are some examples of UGC?

Common UGC formats include talking heads, taste tests, unboxings, before and afters, street interviews, day-in-the-life videos, tutorials and sceptic-to-believer stories.

Which UGC ad format works best?

No format wins on its own. The angle, meaning who you're talking to and what you're arguing, drives CPA far more than the format. Test formats around a proven angle, not instead of one.

How do you brief a UGC creator?

Lock the essentials (the product proof, the offer, the core claim and the CTA) and give the creator freedom over hook phrasing, tone, set-up and style. Match the level of detail to the creator's experience.

Should I use a UGC agency or find creators myself?

Finding creators yourself works while volumes are low. A UGC agency makes sense when creator management is eating your time, quality is inconsistent, or you have lots of UGC but can't explain which ads are working and why.
